Phil Sterling (2008): A widespread species in mainland Britain, almost always found in semi-natural habitats, and generally less common than the similar M. laevigella (227). The adult flies at dusk and is attracted to light. The larva feeds on foodstuffs of animal origin, including owl pellets, fox faeces and the pelts of dead mammals.
